White noise is every frequency at the same strength: a flat, even hiss, like a fan or a radio between stations. Sudden sounds stand out less against it, which is why people use it to study, work in a noisy place, or sleep.

It's the brightest of the noises. If it feels sharp, try pink noise or brown noise, which are deeper and softer.

Questions

Does white noise help you focus?

For some people, a little. A 2024 review of 13 studies found a small benefit for young people with attention difficulties and a slight cost for everyone else. What the research says.

White, pink or brown noise: what's the difference?

White noise is even across all frequencies, so it sounds bright. Pink noise turns the high end down, like steady rain. Brown noise turns it down further, into a deep rumble like a distant waterfall.

Is it free?

Yes. White noise and every space on this page are free, in your browser, with nothing to install.
